Jump menu

is a pop-up menu of options that links to; documents within your site, documents on other Web sites, e-mail links, links to graphics, or links to any file type that can be opened in a browser. There are three basic components a jump menu can contain:

A menu selection prompt, such as a category description for the menu items, or instructions, such as "Choose one:". Note that the first item on the list shows through all the time, so give it a "prompt sounding" descriction.
A list of linked menu items: a user clicks an option and a linked document or file opens.
A Go button (optional)

Once a jump menu item has been selected, there is no way to reselect the item if you navigate back to that page, or if the Open URL In field specifies a frame. There are two ways to work around this problem: Use a menu selection prompt, such as a category, or a user instruction, such as "Choose one:". A menu selection prompt is reselected after each menu selection. Use a Go button, which allows a user to revisit the currently selected link.

Here is a second crumbtrail example for your reference;

Essentially they are hard-coded links that provide users with several jumps back. They perform the same function that browsers try to provide (under "go" in Netscape, and the little down arrow between the "Back" and "Forward" arrows in MS Internet Explorer). There are benefits to having these "Your are here" tracks on the screen at all times, as a convenient permanent navigational aide. Crumbtrails are also very helpful to people who might have been deep-linked to this particular page.

Introductory, Intemediate, and Advanced are irrelevant classifications for navigations.

Tips for creating sitemaps:

Make sure your site map can be easily viewed

Be sure all the page titles in your site map make sense -- this list is very redundant (not to mention wayyy too long)

If your site map requires plug-ins or special technology, let users know in advance (fortunately ZD offers an alternate popup site map, although it's strikingly similar to the nav)

If you include navigation on the site map, make sure it's consistent

A site map that's under construction isn't of much help to users.

"Natural and intuitive"...The Internet is a powerful way for individuals to access information in a manner that facilitates the specific learning process that is best for them;

Is the content and level of detail appropriate for the targeted audience? Do the students know where they have been, what have they have learned, where they have visited, and what resources need to be explored on the web site?

Concept mapping addresses concerns about presenting material at the right level of detail; Are the users given the right amount of information, or is there "information overkill" or, at the other extreme, an over-simplicity in what is offered?

Multimedia interpretations and presentations using the navigation theme could be built according to any of the Hedberg and Harper approaches (Hedberg, J. G., & Harper, B. 1992;"Creating interface metaphors for interactive multimedia"; Proceedings of the International Interactive Multimedia Symposium, Perth, WA, January 27-31, 1992, pp 219-226.)

Navigation metaphor types:

guide (for visual travel through an information 'landscape');
sequential navigation (where cues about where information was located would be made available);
or a visual navigation that would provide a plan of the possible paths through the information landscape;
or a hybrid metaphor that would combine appropriate component parts of all three.
